I've been on Sarasota Local for a while, but not what you would call an "active" member until now. I'm a certified K-9 Trainer, Animal Welfare advocate ... and of course a pet owner. So I am always up for any discussion on these matters!!! Is anyone keeping up with the Breed Specific Legislation that is being considered in Florida???? I have info if you are curious. It is all completely ridiculous.....

I am not sure what people post here, but I just wanted to see if anyone has or knows someone who has kittens born 12/30/08. I had to put my 13 1/2 year old cat down that day and would love to get a kitten born that day to continue my little girl's legacy. I know it may sound a little absurd, but please any information would be helpful! My 2 year old dog misses her dearly and needs a new friend.

Hmmm, not quite sure how this comment wall works but here goes! Having watched the sotry of Prince Chunk, the 44 lb. (!) stray cat, after gettign a smile I felt led to look at the more serious side of this story. I've been involved in animal welfare all my life, coming to it naturally through my Mom and Grampa's example and working with the County Animal Welfare Advisory Committee, Sarasota In Defens eof Animals and others here in Sarasota and here are three points this story doesn't make but I feel should: 1 - The housing crisis is affecting our animals as well as their owners. Right now the shelters are SWAMPED and I'm told that at this point FOSTER HOMES are actually of more value to them than cash donations. 2 - People in distress do stupid things, like this woman turning a ten year old/44 lb cat out on it's own?! It's VERY important for Sarasota to reinforce the message that it is NEVER O.K. under ANY circumstances to abandon a pet and PS it's also against the law. HOWEVER ... this brings us back to the overloaded shelters and the need for foster homes. 3 - Our local charities that assist familiess in need are also overwhelmed, and it's part of this circle. Helping them to help families in crisis keep their homes would stop this whole things before it starts. As Dorothy said, "There's no place like home" and I think that should be the mantra for Sarasota County with the #1 priority being to help pets and people keep their homes and lacking that provide foster homes. Please, help however you can!
