Farmer's Market, Going Green and Jott

This is interim post, with some random thoughts about some small, but great things I learned this weekend. In no particular order and with no particular connection, here they are:

1) Yes I know, I've never been to the Farmer's Market before this weekend and yes it's a sin, especially this time of year, when the mornings are warm, but not sticky, ripe, but not stale. We corralled the entire family; dog, kid, stroller, water bowls, food, provisions and several other odds and ends the troops would… Continue

Century Mark

Well we've reached the century mark here at SarasotaLocal. No we're not 100, wow just think of what the internet looked like back then! Rather it is the celebration of 100th member! First a thank you to all those that have invited your friends and contributed to the community, you've been a tremendous help and let's keep it going. 100 members is by no means a large community, but it is a great start and it's only going to get better from here! You'll notice that the community has already gone th… Continue

Well We're Off and Running

I decided to start this little adventure SarasotaLocal.com, basically on a half-baked idea. Since we moved down here we've met many wonderful people, been to some fantastic places in town; restaurants, beaches, events and have really started to call this place home. I think what cemented the notion that Sarasota was our home and not just a place where we live was when our son was born last May. His birth, for some reason, has given validity to the answer, "Sarasota" when someone says, "So where… Continue

What makes Sarasota Great? 358 words
By Stu Gold

Sarasota has so much to offer, great restaurants, amazing theater, our very own film festival, intimate clubs, posh stores, and beautiful architecture and scenery. All contribute to making Sarasota a great place to live and laugh, to visit and love.
Like any great city there are special attractions like the Mote Aquarium, and St. Armand’s Circle that tourist and residents enjoy. There are also the less know but extremely enjoyable places that only residents seem to know, places like the Cock and Bull, the 4 G’s coffee shop or the Cabaña Inn.
Nature has helped out as well, and Siesta Key, Turtle Island, and Longboat Key are just three examples of the bounty of nature. Of course we have fabulous beaches, and the sunsets are spectacular. When nature wants to put on a fireworks display nothing compares to the lightening we get here.
But what truly makes it a great town, are the people. Yes, all different types, ages, sexes, and backgrounds, yet united in this great town. People in Sarasota are friendly, aware and full of life. They come from all over, but when they get here they all adopt a laid back happy attitude that makes life pleasant and joyful. Strangers nod hello on the streets, drivers will stop and let you pull out into traffic, and nobody that’s been here awhile blows their horn! Sarasota is unique in that it has the charm of the southerner mixed with the sophistication of the northerner; it is a mixture most pleasant, which results in this town being the artistic center of the whole south. Theater, live music, film, art, sculpture, and architecture are at their best here in Sarasota. This attracts great restaurateurs and club owners as well. With all of that the city is still intimate and cozy, the population isn’t so large that people feel lost or feel the coldness of a big city, on the contrary, Sarasota has the feeling of a small town, where people care about each other, and help each other. I’ve lived all over, but nothing and no place compares to Sarasota, it is great, and I love living here.

Brian,
Is there a blocking mechanism on this site? Some button I can press so I do not have to see Dr. Swier's face and encounter his monotonous, one-sided, homophobic, radical monologues every time I log on?
If there isn't, may I suggest you post one? The man's bad news, but thank goodness one of a dying generation.

Hi Brian, I am having a little trouble with the JL group. I have sent out invites but it is not always clear once they respond to me how to actually give them access to the group. Thanks.

Wish we could Brian but the law is that we can only stay for 6 months - IF we were younger and IF we had the money there is a way to stay - set up a business and employ local people - process costs well over half a million - pity is we have many friends who would love to come over, buy a property as a holiday home to get away from the dreadful Irish/UK winters, $ against the €/£ is so good at the moment - would boost the property market but too many restrictions. Never mind we just love the 6 months that we can spend there!

Hi Brian - Just a line to THANK YOU very much for this web site. It is tremendous! I have ducked in and out but having in the past 9 months moved from Ireland to Brittany in France, and then gone to Sarasota for 5 months and then back to Brittany in February to finish the renovating on the house here, I just haven't had time, until now, to sit down and get involved. The content is really great and some super people that I want to contact to become 'friends'! I have had a bit of coaching from Cliff - somehow I have 'blocked' Cliff from being a 'friend' and can't see where to 'unblock' him. SL helps to keep me in touch with what is happening in Sarasota while we are away - unfortunately your Government won't let us stay for more than 6 months and that is why we are not there now! We feel that they should losen up a bit and let people like us have more leeway - we are retired, we have our own health insurance, we own a house in Venice, we bring guests over who spend money in the area, we spend money and contribute to local business, sport, entertainment etc. but they don't want us!!!! Looking forward to more of SL. Anyway onwards and upwards - All the best :::::::::::: >> Pamela
