As American as apple pie: "Smile" provides a platform for some musical-theater stars of tomorrow, but also gives rise to thought.
As I was driving home from tonight's Opening Night of "Smile", the musical by Marvin Hamlisch and Howard Ashman that deals with the "American Young Miss" beauty pageant of 1985, a couple of thoughts went through my mind: I was impressed with the cast's obvious hard work to bring this performance to the Players' stage; I "discovered" (for me) some great new…

When a show or a movie are hyped to the heavens when they first come out, I normally attribute that to an over-zealous publicist and take my time before going to see them, if at all. Such was the case in London at the beginning of the Nineties with Joseph and the Amazing Techni…

I'm not going to be broadcasting my lifestyle and arts-oriented radio show Talk of the Sun Coast, which I have presented live on-air every weekday afternoon since 2004, any more through local Sarasota station WSRQ.
According to an email I received last Friday from station owner Don Murphy, he has sold the majority of his investment in the station to a Tampa media outlet, which will take the station in a more conservative and political direction.
Murphy: "This is something I am very much…

So I'm sitting in Row J of the Players next to my wife Maria, who after two minutes is a quivering mass of proud mother telling the whole row - and anyone else who will listen - that her son's in the cast. And all over the theatre, fathers and mothers and sons and daughters and girlfriends and boyfriends and Facebook and MySpace friends are doing the same thing. Namely, with a cast of 48 and a crew of 25, the Kevin Bacon rule of probability suggests that every audience member in the packed th…

I got to spend a really lovely couple of hours this afternoon being pampered with tea breads, mini pastries and petit fours at the "Traditional English Afternoon Tea" in the Lobby Lounge of the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota.
It was my friend Bob Plunket's idea. Bob, Sarasota Magazine's Senior Editor and beloved "Mr. Chatterbox", wanted to experience what put the "Great" in "Britain", so we gave ourselves into the capable hands of tea server Elsa Gonzalez, executive chef Guillaume Marchand and Resta…

The End of an Era
So long, Marjorie.
by Bob Plunket
Marjorie North’s retirement party last night at Michael’s was an opportunity for the town to wallow in nostalgia like never before, and I’m glad to report that the town took full advantage. Sarasota, believe it or not, is not a nostalgic place; here at Sarasota Magazine we are always very leery about doing a…

Morning Everyone!
This being my final newsletter of the year, I've taken the liberty of including some photos that I shot over the past few days of smiling, happy faces to accompany us into a Brand New Sarasota Year.
It's been a very busy season, so maybe you haven't heard me say it much lately, and I don't bring you flowers as often as I should, but:
I love living in your town, I love doing my daily ra…
